Gabriella

I woke up alone. I felt around in the bed, certain that Rexton wouldn’t have just left me like that. But the bed was empty on either side. “Rexton?” I called his name without really expecting an answer.

My thoughts went immediately to Mable. To being left by someone you trusted. I knew this was entirely different, yet it also felt entirely the same.

I turned on the bedside lamp and saw it. A note on my side of the bed.

Had to go down to Appeal. Hope I’m back before you see this. Don’t get dressed.

“Like hell I won’t.” I found my clothes and quickly got dressed. It wasn’t that I had anywhere to be, but I didn’t like being left behind. I knew he had business interests that had nothing to do with me, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t keep me in the loop. He was the one pushing for even more of a committed and serious relationship.

Once I was dressed I wasn’t sure what my plan was. The clock reminded me it was just about four a.m. Technically it was morning.

I headed into Rexton’s modern kitchen and set to making coffee. He used this super complicated modern contraption I never could figure out, and after I complained a few times he’d bought me a nice classic drip coffee maker where all I had to do was grind the beans, put them in, and pour the water. Within minutes the smell of coffee permeated the room, and my annoyance at Rexton started to dissipate. He was always good at those little things that made me feel more at home.

I was sure he had needed to do something important at Appeal, and I couldn’t expect him to include me in everything.

“I miss coffee.”

I spun around at the sound of the male voice.

I took in the man in front of me. He was dressed in a dark grey suit with a vest and a long overcoat. A silver pocket watch hung from his pocket. He was a ghost. I was pretty sure of that, so I had a decision to make. Did I ignore him and pretend not to see him, or did I reply? I’d try the ignore tactic first as I tried to understand how a ghost had suddenly showed up at Rexton’s when he hadn’t been there before.

“Oh, come on now. I know you can talk.” The ghost replaced the pocket watch in his pocket.

He may have been testing the waters. I still had a chance he didn’t know I could see him.

“I’ve been waiting for you to be alone here.” He took the pocket watch out again.

Had he been here long? “How have you been here without us knowing?” I gave in and responded.

“You aren’t good at checking your surroundings. Rexton either. It surprises me. A man like that is bound to have a whole lot of enemies.” He let out a low whistle. “But this is exciting. No one has spoken to me since I got here. It’s been awfully lonely.
